Preface

Using this Site

By their nature as works on paper, Renaissance prints are fragile objects and therefore usually on view in museums and libraries for relatively brief periods of time. The purpose of this site is to gather together a useful collection of study images for a selection of Italian and Northern European artists. The images are arranged in portfolios designed to emphasize significant aesthetic, stylistic, chronological, iconographic or technical issues relevant to their work.

Issues of attribution, chronology and subject matter for some of the works displayed in this monograph continue to be discussed and debated among scholars. Although we have made every effort to use reliable sources of information, students should approach this site with a critical eye and a questioning mind.

Images are available on the menu under Visual Resources.
