The Parthenon Frieze

Description: Originally located on the Temple of the Parthenon in Athens, the sculpted frieze depicting the Panathenaic festival was some 524 feet long. Rich in both figural components, composition and meaning, it is one of the first major monuments studied by students enrolled in Masterpieces of Western Art. For this reason, we sought to design a program that makes the frieze accessible to students encountering a complex work of art for the first time. Using a scrollable register representing the major sections—west, north, south and east—students navigate the composition in a manner that simulates the experience of actually visiting the monument with the opportunity to focus on selected details of significant aesthetic or iconographic significance.
