The Columbia Center for Archaeology will hold its 3rd annual Graduate conference on March 26-27 and requests papers investigating the relationship between people and things. Turning away from the traditional arena of the sensational and monumental, we would like to explore the objects and spaces of the everyday material world. How do objects shape us and how do we, in turn, shape them? Objects have life cycles, and their fabrication illustrates how material culture comes to be an extension of the body and the self. We would also like to highlight the active role of material culture as historically situated, taking into account the fundamental differences with which it assumes its role within various practices and beliefs. In keeping with the Archaeology Center’s agenda we encourage an interdisciplinary approach that will foster discussion amongst a broad range of studies.
The conference will be held on the 26th and 27th of March 2004. On Friday evening the Introductory Lecture will be given by Lynn Meskell, Columbia University, with a reception to follow. Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be submitted to the Archaeology Center by January 15th. Please include a cover letter stating your paper title, name, address, phone number, e-mail address, department, and any special needs you might have (slide projector, etc.).
