Timeline of early construction


1888 the competition—sixty plans were submitted

1890 design of Heins and Lafarge selected as best of 4 designs submitted.

1891 December, ground broken.

1892 December 27, cornerstone laid.

1899 the crypt was in use for services

1907 death of George Heins, contract rescinded

1911 April 19, the choir and crossing were consecrated. The axial chapel of S. Saviour dedicated in the same year; the last radiating chapel of the choir, S Ansgarius, in 1918.

1911 June, appointment of Ralph Adams Cram. An entirely new plan prepared, including the reworking of the upper choir.
