Romance of the Three Kingdoms

These preparatory drawings are comic adaptations of Romance of The Three Kingdoms, one of the four classics of Chinese literature. The story had been passed around in verbal form for years, finally being written down by Luo Guanzhong sometime between 1330 and 1400.

Three Kingdoms describes the fall of the Han Dynasty (2nd Century A.D.) under Emperor Ling due to the Yellow Scarves rebellion, the subsequent division of the Empire into the three kingdoms - Shu, Wei, and Wu - and the reunification of the empire by the Jin Dynasty. The novel is to complex to summarize adequately here, but it is popular in Japan, Korea and Vietnam. It has spawned countless movies, TV serials, comics and video games throughout Asia.
