Artist Statement

I am interested in what occupies the area between concrete things. As bodies, we identify more with trees, architecture, the sidewalk we walk on. But in fact we are surrounded by a cushion of atmosphere and air, which only becomes visible in revelatory moments. When the fog rolls in (in the case of San Francisco), or when a field is filled with fireflies, or when a cloud of dust is caught in a ray of light in such a way that we pay attention—then the space around us becomes animated and alive. But the microscopic components of air, moisture, and dust are always floating around us, unperceived.

Talcum Powder Drawings
"Talcum Powder Drawings" are digital photographs of clouds of powder particles suspended in shaft of light, as they swirl in the air and gradually fall. The powder animates the sunlight itself, creating an explosion of light. The images are like views of a tiny moving universe, circling within a large architectural context. I call them "drawings" because of the myriad fine, white marks that are created as thousands of specks travel through space (2002).

Each piece can be purchased as a 12" x 16"/16" x 12" [$300] or a 30" x 40"/40" x 30" [$750]:
