Archaeological theory and practice (W4001) takes the student through
the process of archaeological thought, from the formulation of an
idea, through the processes of survey and excavation, to the analysis
of data, and the interpretation of the results. Archaeologies from
several world cultures are included, although examples from Old World
cultures form the primary base for case studies and hands-on work.
The many topics covered in the course include: the meaning of archaeology,
excavation, conservation, ceramics, the individual and culture groups,
and cultural heritage. The course includes hands-on work with ceramics
and other artifacts at Columbia University as well as trips to archaeological
sites in New York city.
